Sprinkling the ashes of the dead is not a new occurrence in this recent world, in fact, it has been around for quite some time.
Though opposed in certain parts of the world, cremation (the burning of bodies and scattering of ashes) is still being practised to this day and it will surprise you to know, that as common as scattering the ashes over a sea or ocean or body of water, there are truly weird places ashes have been scattered. Below is a list of weird if not funny places and ways ashes have been scattered.
WEIRDEST PLACES ASHES HAVE BEEN SCATTERED
1. IN A BLUNT
I am sure we are all conversant with the word blunt, it is also known as weed, pot, reefer, dope, ganja, mary-jane, it goes on and on. Famous and legendary rapper, Tupac Shakur lived a rough, edgy but albeit short life, as he died at the age of 25.
He was killed when a hail of bullets where shot at him. His rap group who were known as “outlaw immortal” decided to honour his death by mixing his ashes with marijuana and smoke.
They said that that was what Tupac requested when he sang the song “Black Jesus”. Yep, that’s right ‘smoke his ashes’, now the question is, how serious was Tupac when he said that?.
2. TATTOO.
An English couple, Mark and Lisa Richmond lost their son Ayden tragically when he was about two years old. Wanting to remember him fittingly, the couple who owned a tattoo parlour mixed the ashes of their son with ink and the father, Mark, tattooed a seven-inch portrait of Ayden on his chest.
3. A DIFFERENT KIND OF INK
Mark Gruenwald, a Marvel comic book editor died unexpectedly from a heart attack at age 47, before he died, his final wish was for his ashes to be mixed with ink and be used in a comic book- guess he loved comics huh?.
The following year, his ashes were used for the comic book “Squadron Supreme”, which was a limited edition comic book, which Gruenwald himself had written and his wishes were granted.
4. COCAINE.
Rolling star’s rocker, Keith Richards, is known to be one crazy fella. After the death of his father in 2002, he mixed some of his dad’s ashes with cocaine and snorted them up!.
Later on, the rocker claimed that the story was just a joke and he didn’t actually do it, instead he scattered his dad’s ashes around an oak tree-Yeah, okay, but did he do it?
5. GONE INTO FRISBEE
Edward Headrick, also known as Steady Ed, was the man who contributed largely to Frisbee as we know it to be today. When he died at age 72, he told his children that his ashes should be mixed with plastic and made into several Frisbees.
Amongst these Frisbees, some went to the family members of Edward and others were auctioned off.
6. OUT WITH A BANG
James Booth, a British vintage shotgun expert who died in 2004, had his ashes mixed into a batch of shotgun shells by an ammunition company. The company happily obliged to do so and presented the wife with 275 12-gauge cartridges containing Booth’s ashes.
These cartridges were then used to hunt by the wife and some close group of friends.
7. INTO THE PRINGLES.
Fredrick Baur, the man who created the Pringles can in 1966, stopping the shipping of chips in bags, was so proud of his invention, that he requested for his ashes to be buried into one of his creations- a Pringles can, when he died. He died at age 89, and his request was granted and his son, Larry Baur granted his wish.
The name Fredric Baur may not ring any bell, but you know his most famous creation. He invented the Pringles can in 1966 so they could ship their new chips without using bags.
He was so happy about his achievement that he told his kids that he wanted to be buried in the Pringles can. He died at age 89 in 2008, his children answered his wishes by putting his ashes in one of his Pringles cans, then they buried it.
According to his son Larry, Baur’s children briefly debated what flavour canister to use before settling on the original.
8. DATE WITH THE PHARAOHS
If there is anything like that, Bruce Reynolds was one of the best-trained robbers of his time. His gang of 15 robbers had run away with a huge amount of money from Glasgow in 1963, August 8.
Even though he ran away and went to hide, he was arrested again when he came back to Britain 5 years later (1968).
Bruce died at age 81, 2013 but, before that, he told his son to scatter most of his ashes in Egypt, where they bury their pharaohs; at the valley of the kings.
His son obliged his request and even posted it on his social media account saying “RIP, last handful in the world greatest necropolis”
His final ashes were taken with that of his wife Angela and scattered in Highgate Cemetry, in the north of London on the 50th anniversary of robbery later that year.
9. SPACE BURIAL
If you know Star Trek’s Scotty, then you know who we are talking about here. Actor James Doohan is another weird soul on our list today. He asked for his burial to be held in space after his death. He died at age 85, 2005.
His family failed in their first two attempts to launch his ashes into space with a rocket, they failed to make orbit.
Finally, in 2012, the Falcon 9 rocket succeeded in launching a portion of its ashes into space. There he joined the creator of star trek Gene Roddenberry whose ashes had been sent to space in Columbia, 1992.
Later in 2016, his family planned to take more of the men’s ashes deep into space- a place where no man had gone before.
